They returned to the action in the east in 1942, and remained there fighting with no end in a maddening fight of attrition with the Vast Russian frontier. Eventually they were forced to fall back, supplies could not make it to the front, there was little fuel, and manpower was being shredded and wasted in a no fall back orders by Hitler but there was no other outcome.
